This afternoon at the Walled Garden conference, the Digital Methods Initiative and I made a funky little website.

The concept WALLED GARDEN addresses issues of identity, mobile communities and networks by focussing on the tendency towards online gated and closed communities. How does this affect the (in)accessibility of information and knowledge?

Basically the question we (DMI) asked is “given web2.0 sites as walled gardens, how many of it’s content is accessible from outside that specific walled garden (platform)”. We found this service usernamecheck.com, which checks if a given username is taken on a whole set of sites.

We extended this service, in the light of the Walled Garden conference, by querying usernames for their existence in all these services. For each service where the username is taken or active, we’ll query google for the name in the service and give back a ranked list of web2.0 services ‘leaking’ information about you.

It would be really nice to do a followup by getting a representative sample of usernames from each of these services and querying them all in a search engine for ‘leaky content’. This touches questions of which sites feed whom, which sites allow only content to come in but not to get out, etc.

In this respect others of the DMI team started tracing and visualizing data flows of information between these walled garderns - which information goes in, and which information goes out. You will be able to find their results here soon.

I just got a tikitag RFID reader. Tikitag will sell their betas starting from October the 1st. What they try to do is quite simple: provide everyone with an RFID reader and some tags, have the user install some software, and let him/her couple the unique RFID number to a service (e.g. open a browser with a specific url) through their site. As the tikitag reader software always connects to the tikitag website, I assume they hope to become the central point on the web linking RFID to information or ‘actions’.

Of course I don’t like third party platforms storing and tracking my information so I started scripting. I made a simple cube with an RFID tag on each side linked to the opening of a web browser with the sites I check in the morning - thus skipping the need to connect to tikitag.com to do local stuff.

If you want to try it out get your hands on a RFID reader (tikitag or not) and follow the instructions on Mediamatic’s page for interfacing with RFID. After that it is really simple to write a script to parse out the tag id and link it to an action yourself.

ParaPlay is een duik in de wereld van profiling, tagging en security. Op donderdag 26 oktober beleef je in Paradiso kunstprojecten met als titels Dat-a, Orchestra of Anxiety en Live to Tell: Surveilling, Profiling and Fixing Identities. TJ’s (DJ’s of Thoughts) zetten je aan tot nadenken over hoe jouw persoonlijke gegevens in allerlei databases sneller de wereld over reizen dan je fysieke lichaam.

Je iPod playlist wordt bij de ingang gescand - als je die nog niet via www.paraplay.nl had ge-upload. Je krijgt een zendertje
waardoor je bewegingen door Paradiso worden gevolgd - je gedragingen worden zichtbaar en zo word je gewezen op je
schijnbaar triviale keuzes die je op zo’n avond maakt. Met een zeer bijzondere harp bespeel je zelf (met handschoenen aan!)
projecties van bewakingsbeelden en geluidseffecten. Je ziet video’s over de controlecultuur, over consumer profiling, surveillance en de impact van nieuwe technologieën op identiteit en privacy. En nog veel meer.

De top 50 van vaakst gespeelde nummers uit de iPod playlists van aanwezigen wordt gedraaid en gemixt door DJ Paul Jay. Je verdient punten met je playlist, je kunt op nummers stemmen, elkaar sms-en en in contact komen met muzikaal gelijkgestemden. Uiteindelijk wint degene die de meeste muzikale matches heeft met andere bezoekers: een doorlopend entreebewijs voor Paradiso tot het eind van 2006!

In de jaren zeventig verliest kritisch links terrein; niemand gelooft meer in de revolutie. In plaats van partijgebonden groepen als Maoïsten, Leninisten en Marxisten ontstaan nieuwe activistische bewegingen die opkomen voor vrouwenrechten, homo’s, dieren, huisvesting en de Derde Wereld. Ze vechten tegen kernenergie en voor een beter milieu. Met succes bestrijden tientallen actiegroepen sociale misstanden. Ze slagen erin om een aantal wezenlijke veranderingen in de maatschappij door te voeren. Er kwamen geen kruisraketten, bont werd afkeurenswaardig, vrouwen kregen het recht op abortus, homo’s mogen huwen en Zuid-Afrika werd verlost van het apartheidsregime.

Maar hoe goed deze actiegroepen het ook voor hadden met de wereld, ze waren bij voorbaat verdacht. Net als de CPN direct na de oorlog, worden zij stelselmatig geïnfiltreerd door de BVD en later de AIVD. Dat heeft een enorme weerslag op kritisch links en leidt tot paranoïde gedrag, sociale uitsluiting, versplintering en radicalisering. De aanslagen van 11 September en de moord op Fortuyn en van Gogh, betekenen een verdere uitbreiding van de macht van de geheime diensten. Wetswijzigingen komen als hamerstuk door de Tweede Kamer. Wie radicaal denkt, is al verdacht, zonder dat er een strafbaar feit gepleegd is. “Gedeeld gedachtegoed” noemen ze dat. En daarmee staat de deur wagenwijd open voor afluisteren, schaduwen, dossiervorming en preventieve hechtenis.

… Niet zonder een bezoekje van de inlichtingdienst …

Een klein lichtpuntje aan de horizon is wel dat grote delen van de Patriot Act waarschijnlijk niet verlengd zullen worden. Maar ja, Bush trekt zich daar toch niets van aan. Ook al is het niet legaal, hij luistert gewoon honderden mensen af.

Oh ja, dan is er ook nog de Eu directive on the retention of data
processed in coonection with the provision of public electronic
communication services (pdf) welke vertelt dat binnenkort alle digitale verkeersgegevens (wie belt met wie, welke websites bezoek je, …) opgeslagen moeten worden voor minstens een half jaar en maximaal 2 jaar. Bekijk ook de begrijpelijke pagina van Bits of Freedom hierover.

Privacy? Ik dacht het niet. Mogen we nog een eigen mening vormen? Mogen we onszelf nog informeren? Nah … dan werkt de indoctrinatie en brainwash niet goed genoeg. Leve het vrije westen! Zucht.

Update: blijkbaar was het toch een hoax.  Neemt niet weg dat het wel had gekund en dat de hoeveelheid en aard van de data die in de gaten gehouden wordt de pan uit swingt!

Who controls the information? In this modern age, search engines have a distinct influence on the retrieval of information from the internet. Your average user will, when prompted with the need to look up information, go to google and look for the pages. This gives google power: when google decides a certain topic, company, organisation or whatever is not acceptable they can keep it out of the search result. In effect, the major search engines bias what the average user sees of the internet.

In order to remedy this situation, we came up with the OpenSearch idea: a search engine that is distributed, not under central control and therefore difficult to manipulate.

Individual-i

A symbol of individual rights
Today, the rights of individuals are being eroded: by government, by corporations, by society itself. This icon “the Individual-i” represents the rights of the individual.
It represents the right to privacy and anonymity in the information age. It represents the rights to an open government, due process, and equal protection under the law. It represents the right to live surveillance free, and not to be marked as “suspicious” for wanting these other rights.
It recognizes that a free society is a safe society, and that freedom is founded upon individual rights.
The battle for individual rights is just beginning; our side needs a symbol.
We hope to see this symbol displayed proudly wherever individual rights are valued.
