European Digital Rights (EDRI) en XS4ALL zijn een online petitie gestart tegen de bewaarplicht verkeersgegevens. Internetgebruikers wordt gevraagd de petitie tegen de bewaarplicht te ondertekenen op www.dataretentionisnosolution.com. De officiële start van de petitie vond plaats aan de start van het hacker festival What the Hack op 28 juni. De ondertekeningen van de petitie worden aangeboden aan de Europese Commissie en het Europees Parlement.

De petitie zegt dat:

- de bewaarplicht een ingrijpend middel is dat invloed heeft op het leven van iedereen;
- het opslaan van persoonlijke gegevens van iedereen in strijd is met Artikel 8 van het Europees Verdrag voor de Rechten van de Mens, omdat het niet proportioneel is;
- veiligheid door bewaarplicht denkbeeldig kan zijn, omdat het mogelijk is dat verkeersgegevens gekoppeld worden aan een bepaalde persoon terwijl ze in werkelijkheid bij een ander horen, of bij een proces dat niet gerelateerd is aan de activiteiten van die persoon;
- de redenen waarmee men dit beleid probeert door te voeren niet legitiem zijn. Sommige lidstaten hebben dit beleid zonder succes geprobeerd door te voeren via hun eigen parlement en proberen dit nu verplicht te stellen via EU-wetgeving onder het mom van harmonisering en internationale samenwerking.

This is an amazing story:

As head boy at a legendary choir school, Lawrence Lessig was repeatedly molested by the charismatic choir director, part of a horrific pattern of child abuse there. Now, as one of America’s most famous lawyers, he’s put his own past on trial to make sure such a thing never happens again.

Lessig has also just written a story about his experiences at the World Social Forum in Brazil. Topics include Free culture, and Brazil’s interesting stance in the copyright debate. Earlier seen here and here.

Duurzame ontwikkeling voorziet in de behoeften van de huidige generaties zonder daarbij de behoeftevoorziening van toekomstige generaties in gevaar te brengen. Duurzame ontwikkeling heeft ecologische, sociale en economische dimensies, en sluit aan bij de realiteit waarin mensen leven.

Zelf denk ik te gaan werken in de duurzame energie omdat dit volgens mij ‘booming business’ is en ik me er moreel achter kan scharen.

Een van de toonaangevende progressieve columnisten in de VS, New
York Times’ Paul Krugman, gooide in februari de knuppel in het
hoenderhok door te schrijven hoe er een geoliede conservatieve
smeercampagne gelanceerd was tegen de Amerikaanse coalitie van
ouderenorganisaties AARP. Deze verzet zich namelijk tegen plannen
om het pensioenstelsel drastisch te hervormen en te privatiseren.
Krugman baseerde zich wederom deels op het onthullende nieuwste
boek van Thomas Frank, “What’s The Matter with Kansas” [1]. In dat
boek onderzoekt Frank hoe de bevolking van Kansas de laatste tijd
steevast politici steunt die beleid maken dat vierkant tegen hun
belangen ingaat. PR-operaties en smeercampagnes blijkt een van de
voornaamste geheime wapens van rechts te zijn.

A very nice essay on how the 3 (4?) major players in the Operating System Buisiness relate to one another. A little outdated, as it was written in 1999, but still relevant and worth the read!

Zoals jullie weten is het uploaden van muziek, films en software – waar auteursrechten op rusten – illegaal in Nederland. Voor al diegenen die wel eens muziek uploaden, wees gewaarschuwd, de stichting brein heeft sinds oktober grootschalig uploaders in de gaten gehouden en verstuurt binnenkort vorderingen! Downloaden van films en muziek wordt gezien als ‘een kopie voor eigen gebruik’ en is daarom legaal.

Een programma waar je mee kan leechen (downloaden zonder uploaden) is bv soulseek – maar dat staat natuurlijk lijnrecht tegenover de filosofie van het delen. Mensen die downloaden via het bittorrent protocol lopen wel gevaar omdat je alleen maar kan downloaden als je ook upload. Voor zo ver ik kan zien richt de stichting Brein zich echter voornamelijk op de groten zoals kazaa, grokster, etc …

Hi y’all, i’d like your opinion on the following:

I think the categories at the left are overkill. I’d rather have a (competely rewritten) filter to browse through the categories (tags). To get an idea, have a look at the current archive. Auke and I will work on this afther the issuescraper has been delivered (in about two weeks). I think a filter/search bar at the top of the blog would be a good idea. Maybe a wikifier can be integrated there as well (hyperlink the nounphrases of a post).

I’d like to show the latest 5 del.icio.us tags of jacoplane, informationlab and justl0l at the left – as we are currently interested in the same kind of things and it gives a quick overview of apparently nice things.

Also a function which shows the recent comments should be at the left.
