Tagging

I love wikipedia.org!!! I was looking for a list of sites which use tags. Ofcourse google would only pop-up the big companies and sites with advertisements. A quick query @ wikipedia for tag gave me this neat list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tags#Online_services_and_their_tagged_objects Probably not exhaustive, but good enough for me ;)

Then i started wondering … how social are these ’social network through tagging’-sites to eachother? So i started a crawl with this list as startingpoints in our beloved issuecrawler. Results when i get through the queue :p

links

Hmmm, i thought linking was the foundation of the net. Apparently some sites do not allow you to link to them. What is that for kind of weird crap? What was it about having reputation, pageranks, … ???

from http://www.litmanlaw.com/content.aspx?page=243&section=12 (notice the no link ;))

Issuecrawler: the movie

As you might know I work with Sonologic on various tools for Richard Rogers’ govcom.org foundation and the new media department at the UvA.

Recently an exhibition, Making Things Public, has been opened at ZKM - Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe (Germany). Govcom.org was asked to present two of its projects: infoid.org (the web issue index which I did not make) and a project around the issuecrawler. For the latter a video has been made which shows a lot of tools we made or maintain with sonologic. Have a look at the instructional video here (mov), here (wmv) or here (real).

Information Politics on the Web

Richard Rogers
MIT Press, December 2004

Does the information on the Web offer many alternative accounts of reality, or does it subtly align with an official version? In Information Politics on the Web, Richard Rogers identifies the cultures, techniques, and devices that rank and recommend information on the Web, analyzing not only the political content of Web sites but the politics built into the Webs infrastructure. Addressing the larger question of what the Web is for, Rogers argues that the Web is still the best arena for unsettling the official and challenging the familiar.

PNAS — Mapping Knowledge Domains

PNAS — Table of Contents (Apr 6 2004, 101 (Suppl. 1))

Specual issue: Mapping Knowledge Domains: The World Wide Web provides a unprecedented opportunity to automatically analyze a large sample of interests and activity in the world. We discuss methods for extracting knowledge from the web by randomly sampling and analyzing hosts and pages, and by analyzing the link structure of the web and how links accumulate over time. A variety of interesting and valuable information can be extracted, such as the distribution of web pages over domains, the distribution of interest in different areas, communities related to different topics, the nature of competition in different categories of sites, and the degree of communication between different communities or countries.

social networking software

As you might know, i now work at the new media department of the uva. One of my jobs is to maintain the issue crawler of Rogers et al.

To get a feel of what social networking via the internet is all about i advice you to take a look at this issue of the journal of computer mediated communication .

* ucinet
* iknow - (Noshir Contractor)
* loglinearp* - (Stanley Wasserman)
* pajek - (Vlado)
* Multinet - (Richards/Seary)
* Centered resonance analysis (Corman)
* Siena - (Snijders)
* issuecrawler - (Rogers et al)

* more social networking software packages and resources can be found here

TouchGraph

TG: Development
associative link networks

TouchGraph provides a hands-on way to visualize networks of interrelated information. Networks are rendered as interactive graphs, which lend themselves to a variety of transformations. By engaging their visual image, a user is able to navigate through large networks, and to explore different ways of arranging the network’s components on screen.
