The Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF) is an international and interdisciplinary biennial that focuses on art, technology and society and is organized by V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media, in Rotterdam. program

DEAF presents a wide range of programme segments, including, of course, a large exhibition of interactive artworks and installations. There will also be concerts, performances, seminars, workshops and an academic symposium. The festival is characterized by a thematic approach. Its aim is to bring current developments and themes around art in our technological culture to a diverse audience.

DEAF is one of the most important international festivals focusing on art and media technology, and it can be regarded as a showcase for research for and production of new media art (some specially commissioned).

This festival in Rotterdam is the ideal place for representatives of various networks to meet and inspire each other, and for international critical debate to take place.

Het programma brengt, verdeeld over drie dagen en twee nachten ± 40 muziekoptredens; een grootse expositie van zo’n 30 kunstrobots en/of interactieve kunstinstallaties; veel videokunst en kunstzinnige videoclips; 3 multimediale theatervoorstellingen; diverse Live Cinema optredens; een eendaags filmfestival; ± 10 voordrachten en lezingen van kunstenaars; workshops en een aantal andere projecten die moeilijk onder bovengenoemde categorie‘n te plaatsen zijn.

Bij het programmeren van STRP vormden vier thema’s het uitgangspunt:
We are the Robots; robotkunst van internationale kunstenaars variërend van lief, klein en breekbaar tot groots, spectaculair en industrieel.
Press ‘Start’; indrukwekkende installaties en kunstwerken waarbij je zelf een actieve rol speelt in de ervaring en realisatie ervan.
Nu-Live; live muziekperformances waarbij de interactie van beeld en geluid en de performance zelf een belangrijke plaats innemen.
RE-; is gebaseerd op de rijke technologische historie van Strijp-S. Het werk van een van ’s werelds belangrijkste pioniers op het gebied van elektronische muziek, Dick Raaijmakers, wordt door gerenommeerde producers geremixt.

Afgelopen zondag ben ik naar de voorstelling “La Vendetta” van Leo Bassi geweest. Behalve dat ik het een supervoorstelling vond wist ik het niet goed te omschrijven. Tot ik deze review tegen kwam:

Leo Bassi speelt deze week in Nederland. George van Houts -van Van Houts en De Ket- bezocht de voorstelling en stuurde een laaiend enthousiaste reactie. Laten we die jullie niet onthouden:

“Gisteravond de comedian gezien die begint waar alle anderen ophouden inclusief, oh wat is ie moe, Teeuwen. Leo Bassi. Hij speelt deze week nog vijf keer in het land. Besteedt er aandacht aan maar ga in ieder geval kijken. Een 55-jarige man laat je alle hoeken van het firmament zien. Hij komt aan,als een dreun in je middenrif. Zijn programma La Vendetta maakt je als kijker medeplichtig aan alles wat fout is in de wereld zonder ook maar een moment de dominee uit te hangen. Schaamteloos ver gaat hij naar de verste uithoeken van de menselijke psyche, misbruikt het publiek daarbij gruwelijk mooi, om uiteindelijk met een nummer te eindigen waarbij alle cabaretteketet te kakken wordt gezet.
Zijn thema is manipulatie en macht, hij behaagt geen moment, treitert je met leegte en niks, je lacht je gek en uiteindelijk verafschuw je jezelf omdat hij je daar heeft gekregen waar hij je wilde hebben. Daarbij vertelt hij ook nog eens van tevoren wat ie gaat doen en je denkt dan: ‘Ik? Nooit!’ Leo Bassi is angstaanjagend. Ik ben gisteravond in De Kleine Komedie tot in het diepst van mijn ziel geraakt en geschokt. Leo Bassi. Ga kijken!”

Vanavond nog in de schouwburg Amstelveen. Ook weer een absolute must, ware het niet dat er ook robodock is vanavond. Gelukkig heb ik hem al gezien, alhoewel ik hem graag nog is zou zien.

Robodock Festival en science center NEMO organiseren Technologie Conferentie op vrijdagmiddag 23 september om 15 uur in NEMO.

Op het programma van Robodock (21 t/m 24 september 2005) staan spektakeltheater, multi-media, beeldende kunst, muziek, industriële installaties; the state of the art van robotkunst; een continue stroom van bandjes op de bumper stage; een vj-file en technologische experimenten als teslacoils, stoomhoovercraft en ultrasone geluidseffecten.

Robodock heeft als toekomstmissie om meer en meer de nadruk te leggen op het snijvlak van technologie en kunst. Het festival wordt nu al door veel professionals uit de robotica-wereld, de creative industry en de technologie top uit het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven bezocht. Het is een doelstelling om deze platformfunctie verder uit te bouwen. Hiermee wordt gestart op vrijdag 23 september, in samenwerking met science center NEMO.

Robotica-godfathers Stelarc en Chico MacMurtrie geven een lezing over de techniek achter hun kunst. Uitvinder van Pips:lab Kees Duyves houdt een lezing over het nieuwe licht binnen de nieuwe media. In NEMO staat een zeer geavanceerde cyborg, Elektra. De maker, Richard Schaper, vertelt over de techniek achter deze cyborg. De voertaal van dit programma is Engels.

Als je al wat sfeer van het festival wil opsnuiven moet je maar even naar de video of de gallery kijken. Dit is absoluut een van de meest bizarre, toffe, vage, wonderbaarlijke, futuristische festivals van deze tijd. Een absolute must!

Remember when Robert McHenry, former editor of Encyclopedia Britannica interrogated the value of Wikipedia, basically saying that something like Wikipedia could never be trusted to be reliable? Well, since then, they have been busy increasing the reliability. Now, it seems the Encyclopædia Britannica isn’t so perfect after all:

A SCHOOLBOY with a fascination for Poland and wildlife has uncovered several significant errors in the latest — the fifteenth — edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Lucian George, 12, a pupil at Highgate Junior School in North London, was delving into the volumes on Poland and wildlife in Central Europe when he noted the mistakes.

Reason magazine interviews FCC Chairman Michael Powell. Lawrence Lessig recently also wrote an article about Powell. Liberals tend to hate him because the FCC is cracking down on “indecency” in the Media (remember Janet Jackson and Nipplegate) but I feel he is one of the bright spots in the Bush administration. He has allowed things like WiFi to exist in an unregulated spectrum. From the interview:

Reason: Let’s turn that around. Can you have enough piracy to get big content promoters to give people the things they want?

Powell: Well, I think the music industry is a beautiful case in point. They might kill me for saying so, but I think [Napster inventor] Shawn Fanning did America a service. If Napster hadn’t woken them up, I don’t think you would have had MP3 players. I don’t think you would’ve had iTunes. I don’t think you would’ve had the iPod. I don’t think you would’ve had the idea of the single-song transaction.

There’s a long tradition of that in communication technology. If you didn’t have Bill McGowan breaking the law, you would’ve never had MCI. You would’ve never had a competitive long-distance industry. If you didn’t have [Dish Network founder] Charlie Ergen, who dared to say “I’m going to pop up a few satellites and challenge broadcasters in a different way.…”

What’s bright about this future is there’s so much more power in radical innovators and their work that there’ll be constant new challenges to innovate or die.

The preservation and expansion of the information commons has long been a cause of hackers, academics, and the odd technoliterate librarian, but in the world’s fifth-largest country it is fast becoming national doctrine. And the implications hardly end with free samba: Brazil, in its approach to drug patents, in its support for the free software movement, and in its resistance to Big Content’s attempts to shape global information policy, is transforming itself into an open source nation - a proving ground for the proposition that the future of ideas doesn’t have to be the program of tightly controlled digital rights now headed our way via Redmond, Hollywood, and Washington, DC.

No surprise there either, actually. In a world divided into the content-rich and the content-poor, it’s increasingly clear to those on the losing side of the divide that the traditional means of addressing the imbalance - piracy - is a stopgap solution at best. Sooner or later some country was bound to square off with the IP empire and be the first to insist, as a matter of state policy and national identity, on an alternative.
