E-voting

In the 1980s, when it was discovered that the wife of the leader of the free world was using an astrologer to chart her husband’s political career, it was noted that the exact same practice was predicted by Robert A. Heinlein in his book, “Stranger in a Strange Land” which was published more than a generation before the revelations about Nancy Reagan.

Robert Heinlein also showed how you can steal an election without anyone being the wiser: you use a computer system to count votes, where the computer system’s integrity is trusted and there is no means to provide a reliable audit trail outside of the computer system.

He wrote about that in “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” which was first published in 1966. And nearly 40 years later, (almost) nobody seems to have remembered yet another of the late, great Bob Heinlein’s prophetic views.

“The lessons of history teach us — if the lessons of history teach us anything — that nobody learns the lessons that history teaches us.”

And to think that Diebold’s (one of the companies who make the evoting machines for the US elections) CEO Walden W. O’Dell, appears on the list of bush sponsors, that most evoting software is propietary and blackbox (nobody can look at the algorithm), that apparently O’Dell has said that he will do anything too get Bush a re-election (Orwell Rolls in His Grave) and that the audit trails are easy to tamper with … Fortunately the Electronic Frontier Foundation keeps an eye on it … hopefully that’s enough.

contracting at the Defense Department. If it doesn’t fly the first time around, you can be sure it’ll be back.

The Department of Defense is handing out contracts for a project to record what soldiers see and do in battle zones. The new initiative closely resembles another, called LifeLog, that the Pentagon scrapped months ago. Wired.com article by Noah Shachtman:

It’s been seven months since the Pentagon pulled the plug on LifeLog, its controversial project to archive almost everything about a person. But now, the Defense Department seems ready to revive large portions of the program under a new name.

Using a series of sensors embedded in a GI’s gear, the Advanced Soldier Sensor Information System and Technology, or ASSIST, project aims to collect what a soldier sees, says and does in a combat zone — and then to weave those events into digital memories, so commanders can have a better sense of how the fight unfolded.

Photographs of RFID Clothing Labels “Unauthorized” - Advanstar threatens CASPIAN founder: Pull or else

Photographs taken by privacy activist and writer Katherine Albrecht at the Frontline Expo 2004 conference are “unauthorized” according to Advanstar. The event management/PR firm has threatened to ban Albrecht, founder and director of CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering) from future events it organizes unless she “refrain[s] from making the photos available.”

The photographs in dispute show Checkpoint RFID-enabled prototypes of Abercrombie & Fitch, Calvin Klein, Champion and other name brand clothing labels.

“The notion that I somehow ’surreptitiously’ photographed the displays at your event is baffling,” Albrecht said in a written response to Advanstar. She characterized Advanstar’s threat as “an attempt to censor images that fairly and accurately depict the activities that took place at their conference.”

Advanstar’s censorship “request,” and Albrecht’s response are posted at:

Popular Tags on Flickr Photo Sharing

Flickr is a service where you can upload pics, annotate them and give them access policies. That way people can look for terms and find the pics. Also easy integration of those pics in your own blog.
Commercial though … The page i pointed at is pretty cool and free.
